I posted this a while back in the "Creating Plugins" area, but I'm realizing it's more of a request for someone who knows what they're doing to take the idea and run with it than looking for help doing it myself (since it's way out of my skill set).
The Gizmoproject VoIP softphone recently released their developer's API and I think it would be great to be able to have the VoIP client built right into DL via a plugin (this would be more directly integrated than with the Jon's Phone Tool method, which calls up the Gizmoproject softphone itself). Since Gizmoproject uses the SIP standard for its VoIP protocol, such an integration could probably be used with any SIP-based VoIP service.
I wholeheartedly agree that there needs to be a plugin with GizmoProject. This is a great open architecture VOIP application that is quickly becoming a critical tool in business. It only makes sense that Daylite3 connects iteself with it. There are so many ways it could be integrated. I hope whoever steps up to implement this thinks big and delivers a plugin that capitalizes on this potential.
The ability to place calls through Gizmo is high on my wish list.
Also delightful would be the ability to receive Gizmo or other VoIP calls (incoming call opens the record of the contact whose Gizmo ID or SIP number is calling, and optionally a new Task marked as incoming call).
I realize part II is more complex and would love to see simple dialing ability for starters.
