it would be nice to have the possibillity to scan incoming Papers direct with a link to a daylite contact. incomming emails are in Daylite automaticly but what is with the incomming papers?
I do it allready manually, scanning, than creating a file reference... Is there a way to make it automatic? Perhaps with a plugin? |

This would be a very, very useful plug-in for many professions. One of my clients recently moved from Windows/GoldMine to Mac/DayLite would love to have this kind of functionality.

Yes, I could see that; Coming from using Windows Paperport and now use Readiris on OS X...
Readiris has the scanner pen that you can scan TEXT in and it will OCR it for you but you can also scan images too.. Take this ability from Readiris to DL and the ability to LINK imaged doc's I am loving DL very much.. Just a little finishing here and there on exisiting functionality in reports (DL is VERY VERY powerful indeed already), add the ability to scan and reference paper documents for contracts, sales, etc. and add to the DMI plugin to include iChat, WOW! |

I agree with George, that this is something that would be worth paying for separately. In fact, that seems to be an industry standard for adding this kind of functionality to collaboration systems. Before the plug-in itself is written, however, I think that Daylite will need to be reworked to add in much better document management support. It could start out rather simple, but there are architecture, syncing, version, check-in/check-out, etc. issues to work through.

These are important matters that can ideally be addressed by the filesharing setup on the Daylite users' network. The main consideration is that the filepath of a file reference must not change or the link will break. It's not the end of the world because you still have the actual filename and can search for it pretty quickly and repair the link. However, I recommend designing a file storage/folder hierarchy where the folder names and locations won't have to change. One way to do this is to collect the files in one (or more) place(s) with unchanging filepaths, and use aliases if you want to place them elsewhere for browsing purposes. To the extent people access the files via Daylite, the logic of their filing in the Finder is unimportant. Similarly, hierarchical placement matters less as searching gets faster and more sophisticated (for example, using keywords or tags for Spotlight). Regarding versions: when users are filesharing live, only one person can open a document with read/write privileges at a time. For this reason I discourage people from making copies to their desktops because (as you know) independent changes or version confusion can quickly complicate things! So a scanner component would need to put the scan files in a static location, and more complex filing would be optional. If the plugin identifies (or you specify) the contact in order to create a file reference for a Daylite contact, it could use that info to enter a Spotlight keyword as well (also being the client name, or project name, or whatever). . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . While we wait for Document Management Nirvana via Daylite, one tiny little utility that can make the wait a little bit more pleasant is MoRU by Windstorm Software. MoRU is a single user document management Mac Gem with features not available in products at a highter level.
I scan my personal and business documents into my Mac via HP's Scan Zone (all PDF). Regardless of where I store each scan, MoRU keeps an active dynamic list of each and all scans. After a weekly scan session, I drag my scanned PDFs from MoRU into Daylite. As opposed to products like DevonThink Pro and SOHO Organizer which replicate the scanned PDF to their own folders - thus creating duplicates, Daylite leaves the files in their original folders. Did I mention MoRU costs $10.00 US? I would like Daylite to provide me with a group of custom fields specifically for document and web linking. |
