Asterisk is a full-blown open source replacement for traditional telephone PBX installations. We have it in my office. It would be great if there were a plug-in for it that allowed:

• Caller ID interaction to track new callers and to automatically pull up records from currently tracked contacts.
• Access to voice mail via DayLite.
• Dial-out from DayLite.
• Automate call series (if you have a call list, then as soon as you hang up one call, the system would automatically begin dialing the next call…and track call attempt results)

I could go on. Bottom line is that the multi-user DayLite could use integration with the multi-user phone system. Skype and the other VoIP solutions are nice for lone rangers but not necessarily for full organizations.

I'm building my Asterisk box (for this client) now, but have every intention of at least experimenting with linking it to Daylite with Jon's Phone Tool. A product that Daylite already works with and is in the Dial options for use. It has allowed me to use Daylite to call with my bluetooth enabled cell phone. Will use a modem for dialing or even just spit out phone tones over the speakers. One of the options in JPT's config screens is Asterisk. I'm not sure if it has to be a local soft phone, or if it will allow you to tell it about hard IP phones and pick up the call in a traditional manner. Hence my experimenting.

Yes it means registering JPT, but there is a trial window... maybe it will help.

I am experimenting with JPT and have been for the past week. No success getting the JPT to talk to Asterisk yet. But I am hopeful.

It would be much better if Jon would introduce a dedicated DayLite tie with Asterisk - even when I get it to work. The additional functionality like the address book stuff is just not needed and a waste of resources (however small).

I would be interested in this as well. Right now, I'm looking for a way to use vonage with DL. I do realize that I can use JPT to do it, but I just installed, and quickly uninstalled JPT, because it it seems like such overkill (and it kept wanting to open the application everytime I opened Dashboard). That being said, I do think that I'll probably end up looking into Astrisk in the future and it would be absolutely awesome to have some DL functionality at that time.

Jon's Phone Tool works very well with Asterisk and DayLite - the combination. As to JPT launching every time you called up the Dashboard, that is because you installed the JPT Widget. If you remove it from active use on your Dashboard, JPT will no longer be started when you use Dashboard.
