When multiple slips are selected in Billings the bottom of the screen shows the sum of the monetary totals for the selected slips, all nicely added up.

In addition to the monetary totals, I would like to see the sum of the time for the selected slips.

My work is budgeted based on a set number of hours rather than a monetary figure. The Billings time logging feature is wonderful, but there is no way to see how many hours I've taken on a project so far. Its quite frustrating to see the total money right there, but have add up the time in every slip in my head in order to see if I'm on-budget.

P.S.
Another way this information could be useful is to show a running difference between the estimate total time and the working total time. The only problem is that I don't know how this running difference would work once working slips are invoiced.

Check out Billings' reports, some of which give you at least some of the functionality you're looking for (including a per-project estimate vs. actual report).

The "per-project estimate vs actual" report would suffice in the mean-time (while waiting for a nice running ticker), but I could not get it to report "actual" amounts until I sent an invoice, long after I needed the information.

Thanks for the quick reply, Adam!

Cool but still cumbersome, just like total earnings and balance for a project, I'd like the total time spent to show next to in its own column in the Project View.

Since a year now I've been using Billable for all of my project activities and I find it a very useful program although it is not that feature full as Billings.

I'm considering moving to Billings now but, as I have read here and seen in the trial version, there is no way to tell how long you have been busy on a project when you select the slips. This is one big plus for Billable and one majore leak for Billings. I hope this will be "fixed" in the upcoming versions and then I'll be happy to make the step and start using Billings.

I agree w/ Tom J. This is a MAJOR problem. What good is time-tracking software that won't tell you how much time you've spent on something?

I don't want to create an invoice just so I can figure out how much time I'm spending. I've already bought Billings, and I've been struggling with it for a while. I'm starting to consider going back to keeping text files which note the time, which was my previous system.

Perhaps I'm needlessly ranting, but this is extremely frustrating.

Summary totals. This has been a frequent request all throughout the Billings software. It leaves out summary totals in almost every place you would expect to find them - under columns on numeric data. I too am hoping that they are working on what seems to be a large oversight. I really enjoy using Billings, and I am limping along with workarounds and partial solutions like the reports. But I am hoping for better in the near future.

How about it MarketCircle, any chance of getting relief on this subject?

I would ditto the requests in this thread. Time totals where time is listed would be a great help.

....hey, I want this too. Relatively new Billings user and this is something I REALLY need as well.

I heard good things about Billings but so far, I have to say that I am not terribly happy with the lack of responsiveness from the developers on the forum here. This seems like a pretty thing to implement and this thread has been lying idle without resolution for nearly a year now... frowne

Bump

I also keep track of hours based on time per month, not monitary value. as the month closes I need to know the running total as I go so I know how to budget my time. I currently pull a invoice and preview it to get the total time of the slips. Would be nice if I could create slip templates also...

We actually do have slip templates in the what we call Slip Blueprints. You can create a Blueprint slip pre-populated with whatever settings you want.

As for slip time totals we do have them on a per project basis and are currently looking at a good way to total and display that total across projects. We do display the current total for a whole project though in the projects table if you choose to show the "Time" column.

I've just started using Billings 3. my biggest concern also lies in the inability to track a budget for a project, or (ideally) a slip. I cannot comprehend why the estimate feature is in there if there is no simple way (outside of a report) to monitor this progress. I've been reading and it appears that so many other people want this feature as well.

If I might make a recommendation, please look at the Tick web application. Our company has been using it for quite some time now and it works beautifully for monitoring time and budget in tasks (slips) as well as for the entire project. Tick sorely lacks any way to invoice from its data or export it outside developing from its API. The visual indicators it uses are perfect, some kind of similar implementation would make Billings almost perfect from what I can tell so far.

As it stands right now, I may have to use Billings for my invoice management and estimate/invoice sending tasks, and also continue to pay $20/month for Tick until Billings can get this feature built in. The time saved by paying for Tick will be well worth it.
