Any chance of adding this feature?

I don't understand why you can merge contact's extra fields, but not organization's.

I don't think anyone understands this limitation. I'd love to see it implemented in a future build.

I'm looking for the same functionality with Organizations that I have with contacts: find duplicates, if so desired, merge.

That is a slightly different feature request that the question Christian is asking for in regards to letter merging with Organization's Extra Fields. I have already logged that (locating and combining Organizations) as a request and will add you to list.

I have entered <$contact.defaultRole.organization.extra2$> into my order (excel spreadsheet). Extra2 represents one of the company's account numbers.

Nothing happens. Everything else merges correctly, Contact's company address, phone, etc.

Just to confirm, this field belongs to the Contact's Default Organization and is stated by the default field being checked in the Linked to section?
