I have a problem with attached (linked) documents. You see, I have a laptop. That means that I am not always attached to a server where all good documents should live if they are linked to objects in DayLite and are to be shared by other users. Managing two copies of the same document has plenty of issues - issues I hope to not have to get into in great detail here.

What do you guys think about more "document management" functionality, in DayLite. If it makes sense, I'll propose it as a feature request I think it would work something like this:

• If I create a document, I would be able to "check it in" to DayLite. That results in the proper link to the object(s) that I need it linked to. When it is checked in, the document disappears from my local system and is placed on the server (this happens in a virtual way if I am currently using an offline database). If I check out a document, then DayLite grabs a copy of the document and places it in a DayLite managed directory. Only one person at a time can check out a document with read/write privileges. Any number of people can check out a document with read-only access.

That is the very brief overall view. I spend years in the document management industry so I know about the loads of details that could be added to this basic model. However, I am not suggesting that DayLite become a version control, full-blown, document management system. Just the basics for making offline/online linked documents a workable situation.

What do you guys think? Are the organizations that I am working with the only ones seeing this as an issue?

* For the moderators: I know that this it not the place for a feature request. This is more of a feature and usability discussion. If it makes sense to a lot of users, then I shall make a proper feature request through the proper channels!
