Two things I haven't fitted into my workflow: Opportunities and Groups. I think I understand opportunities and why it doesn't fit me.
I still have the feeling that Groups could be useful to me, but I'm not sure how. How do you use Groups? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A good design is better than you think. - Rex Heftmann |

I use Groups as their name suggests, to group sets of Orgs/Contacts together that might be related.
Some of the Groups I use include: NCN—Attendees of a local networking group for creatives. Xmas Cards—A list of people who I send Xmas cards to. FSA—Members of the FileMaker Solutions Alliance (which I beleong to) and have dealings with outside of it. WAUK—Members of a mailing list I subscribe to and have used as freelancers in the past. Anywhere I have a group of people that have something in common, where that state is important to note, I’ll use a Group. Think trade bodies, networking groups, etc. HTH |

Ah, thanks. This was probably an obvious question
I had a feeling this was probably it, but it's comforting to get comfirmation of it's use. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A good design is better than you think. - Rex Heftmann |

I understand how Groups work, but I can not figure out how to make one. I'm trying to create a Group called "Treo Contacts" that limits my vast contact list down to just the contacts in the categories I need on my Treo. When I try to set it up, I double-click on contact>category."is not" xxxxxx
to limit the list. Nothing is in the group. What am I doing wrong? |

It sounds like you are trying to create a Smart List in the Groups view, but that is not the way to create a new Group. A SmartList in the Groups view is useful when you already have several existing Groups and want to view only those with certain criteria.
It can be a bit confusing at first, but there are several ways to create a Group. Here are a couple: 1. While in the Contacts view, select the contacts you want in the new group and then use the command from the Create menu: New Group for X Objects. If you then switch to the Groups view, you'll see the new group with those contacts. One way to select just the contacts you want would be to sort the Contacts list according to the criteria you are interested in, (such as Category), and then highlight those contacts of interest. 2. You can use a Smart List to select the contacts you want in the new Group (also done in the Contacts view) and then from that smart list select all and then use the above command from the Create Menu. Experiment - it sounds a little weird at first, but it works nicely. Regards, Howard |
