If ten contact records are linked to a project and each contact record is linked to three document references, why wouldn't the project be automatically linked to the total document references of all contacts linked to the project? When I select a project and show File References, I do not get list of links. Am I missing something?

You've said that the file references are linked to the Contacts, but are they also linked directly to the Project? If not, you wouldn't expect them to show in the Project's linked file references, any more than you would expect other things linked to the Contact showing in the Project.

There are a number of ways to link things to each other. I find the quickest is drag and drop. If you can see the file references on screen, and the Project somewhere else on the screen (I use the Quick Find window a lot for this), then you can simply drag one to the other (Project to reference, or vice versa) to link them.
