I am fairly new to Daylignt and have to make a phone decision. How a phone syncs is fairly important to the decision. I currently have Verizon and would like to stay with them and get a new Blackberry Storm. I can switch to AT&T and go the Iphone route, but it would be more hassle. How easy are each to sync, and what is needed?

Thanks
Bill

Hi Bill,
As I'm sure you might expect, since the iPhone syncs natively with the Mac (that is, not requiring a 3rd party piece of software like the BBs do), it is the most trouble-free. In fact I've been syncing my iPhone flawlessly since I bought it 15 months ago. Since your phone only picks its data up from Apple's Address Book and iCal, Daylite syncs to those 2 applications and your phone picks stuff up from there. So having a phone that syncs with AB/iCal with ease is the critical part and of course the iPhone wins that.

If you are so inclined to get an iPhone, I definitely encourage it since beginning in early 2009 there will be a Daylite app for the iPhone [www.daylitetouch.com]. This is going to be very exciting.

Hope this helps,
Cynthia

Hey Ultrastryk,

I agree with Cynthia, I have been syncing with my iPhone since it was released to Canada and I have yet (knock on wood) to experience any issues with the sync between my phone and Sync Services. My experience has been great.

None the less, I've included some instructions on Syncing, but you are going to want to read the entire Daylite Synchronization Guide, which can be found under the Help menu. Daylite is compatible with iSync (Apple's Sync services), the industry standard for syncing. Daylite will sync data between itself and iCal/Address Book seamlessly in the background, without you needing to launch the other programs. From there, it is the users responsibility for getting their data onto their phone or PDA device.  Here is a list  of Apple's supported iSync devices. For devices that are not directly compatible with iSync, both us and Apple recommend using  Missing Sync  by Mark Space to handle the sync between your device and Apple's sync services.

About Synchronization
Daylite shares information with Address Book, iCal, other applications, and your phone or handheld device using a Mac OS X technology called Sync Services. It runs in the background on your computer to ensure that data in all these places is synchronized and up to date. You can't interact with Sync Services directly—it acts as a central database of information to be shared with any software that supports synchronization.
If Daylite's synchronization is turned on, it will automatically sync contacts, organizations, tasks, and appointments with other applications or devices using Sync Services. You can specify which data is passed on to Sync Services and thus synchronized to Address Book, iCal, and your mobile device.
Daylite will only synchronize when it's open. If you make changes on your phone, in Address Book, or in iCal, the changes will synchronize the next time you open Daylite.

Synchronizing contacts and organizations
Daylite can automatically synchronize contacts and organizations with other applications and devices. In the Synchronization pane of Daylite Preferences, you can select and specify your synchronization settings. Daylite creates a 'Sync Contacts' list for contacts and 'Sync Organizations' list for organizations. Only items in your Sync Contacts and Sync Organizations lists will be syncing with other applications and devices.
To synchronize contacts and organizations
1. Choose Daylite > Preferences...
2. Click Synchronization.
3. If you are syncing for the first time, click Turn Syncing On.Daylite opens the Synchronization Setup window.
4. Select the Sync contacts and organizations checkbox. Click Next.
5. Choose how you wish to add items to the Sync list:
▪ To add all contacts from the Contacts list (these are contacts owned by everyone in the database) in Daylite to the Sync Contacts list, click Add and choose All Contacts.
▪ To add all contacts from the My Contacts list (these are contacts that you own) in Daylite to the Sync Contacts list, click Add and choose My Contacts.
▪ To add contacts at your own free will, select 'I'll add contacts myself later.'
6. The above rules apply to organizations also.
7. For Address Book settings, you can choose one of the following:
▪ Entire Address Book. All contacts and companies in your Address Book will be synchronized with Daylite.
▪ Daylite Group. Only the contacts and companies in your Address Book's Daylite Group will be synchronized with Daylite.
8. Click Next.
9. Review your settings and make sure everything is fine. Click Synchronize.
10. When syncing is complete, click Close.
To match categories in Daylite with groups in Address Book and iPhone, and with categories on your Palm, select the 'I synchronize with an iPhone or The Missing Sync for Palm OS' checkbox.

About task and appointment synchronization
Tasks and appointments in Daylite can be synchronized with other applications and handheld devices. You can select the categories and other settings for task and appointment synchronization in the Synchronization pane of Daylite Preferences. Only those appointments/events/tasks that are assigned a category you have selected in the preferences will synchronize.
Daylite categories can be synchronized with matching iCal calendars. You can now select what you want to sync and maintain your classifications on your phones, palm devices, and/or iCal. This multi-calendar syncing is very useful and keeps your data organized. If you choose a category or calendar that does not have a match, it will be created during synchronization. Any appointments/events/tasks that do not have a category in Daylite will not synchronize.
You can only synchronize the tasks and appointments owned by you. Tasks and appointments that are assigned or delegated to you and meetings you have accepted can also be synchronized.

Thanks for the help. It looks like the Iphone is the better phone to use when you have a MAC. Now I guess I just need to determine if the coverage will be as good as with Verizon.

Thanks
Bill

Yes, I know the Iphone is only on AT&T. That is my dilema. I am hearing that AT&T's coverage is not as good. I travel the whole southeast for work, and need good coverage. Anyone have input on the coverage?
Thanks
Bill

A lot of our customers are using iPod touches and keep their phone because either they don't get good coverage and getting out of their existing plan is too costly (i.e. company won't pay).

Don't forget about Daylite Touch. http://www.daylitetouch.com

We'll be showing it at Macworld in it's full glory smile

I'm one of those people who uses an iPod touch, and even before having Daylite Touch I find it way more useful and fun than my phone, which is a Palm Centro (just like a TREO only cheaper). Syncing has been working quite well and the main omission is that Tasks don't sync. Daylite Touch will take care of that!

I've been hanging on to my phone for the reasons AJ suggests, but my contract is up on April 20th, so I have a feeling an iPhone is in my future!

Regards,

Howard
