Something I've not been able to figure out whether it's possible, but it looks like not. :-?

Suppose I have a number of tasks that need to occur on a regular basis, such as running daily/weekly reports or rotating my backup tapes (I'm the IT dept :-).

It seems I can specify a task as 'Routine' status but, unlike a Calendar appointment, I can't set a particular repeat schedule. They may not need a time slot set aside, but they would need the ability to be marked as done (which Appointments don't offer).

Does anyone know of a way to do this?

Unfortunately, we don't currently have repeating tasks. However, if you do a set of tasks routinely, you may want to make them an Activity Set (these can be set up in Preferences).

You can easily create the activity set on a weekly basis, for instance, and it will automatically set out the various tasks that you need to do, and even automatically set relative due dates, etc. if appropriate.

Is Daylite planning on implementing this feature. I can't believe that other people don't use/need this to function more efficiently. Most of life is "maintenance" after all and there are lots of things that need to be repeated regularly that are not time specific and should not clutter up the calendar but instead should be listed in the to do/tasks section.

MC - please let me know a timeframe on this or if I should even expect to find this in Daylite. To me it's a dealbreake. Obviously I made a mistake in purchasing this software before checking if you can set up a repeating task.

Right now, tasks in Daylite tend not to be "scheduled," thus it is somewhat difficult to schedule future instances of a task. However, we are definitely aware of this need and I believe the engineers have been investigating how best to implement it for a future release.

In the meantime, you may find that Activity Sets (from the menubar, choose Daylite > Preferences, then click on Activity Sets) for sets of recurring tasks are useful, and somewhat mitigate the lack of specifically repeating tasks.

For what its worth Rob i was just writing an email to Marketcircle with almost the same example as you before i did a forum search .. Routinely rotating RAID disks wink

I think it is essential to be able to schedule repeating Tasks .. in my mind i see little difference between them and Appointments anyway.

We also need customizable repeat values ... the fixed ones are just not flexible enough. For example i want a meeting every 14 days, or rotating the drives every 2 days.

Also is it possible to repeat Activity Sets? Doesn't seem to be .. so even if i do have a set of reminders of IT tasks to do each week i still have to manually apply that Activity Set to each week ...

cheers,

I would also like to see repeating tasks added, and more flexibility on repeating things.

I too could really use repeating tasks. Primarily for inside sales call reminders. Our calendar is littered with call back "Appointments" that are date but not time specific. I feel that these items should reside in the task bar and I would like to have the option of setting up a reminder 1 day (again, not time specific) in advance or even have notifications pop at 12:00 am for all tasks slated for that day.

This is the single feature that everyone continues to come to me about and they do so on a regular basis.

Thanks and I'm looking forward to the next update.

I'd love this function as well. However I would only like TAsks to actually display for the forthcoming month as opposed showing every single Task you have to do.

Have you tried creating a Smart List in the Task View? I'm not at my computer now, but I know you can set a Smart List to display X days old.

Wow!

I need this so bad for the office and my personal life...

Spanish lessons, Ajax Lessons, Personal Development, this stuff destroys my cal and I just want them on the side as repeating tasks!!!

Thanks for putting this out there, MY ONLY issue with daylight!

I'm chiming in here to also voice that repeating tasks are incredibly important!

Karenp said it best last year that "most of life is maintenance" and the tasks required to just maintain shouldn't clutter up a calendar.

For the past 4 years or so, I've been "married" to a palm device for just this purpose. It's kept all of the recurring drudgery under control in my life - everything from checking bank balances, run business reports, clean the ice machine at the office, renew licenses & registrations, oil in the car, wash the dog, maintaining phone contact with important clients, etc... everything that runs on intervals is managed in my Palm - now Treo phone.

With Palm, one cool feature is the ability to "redo" at a designated time after completion. So if you procrastinate on something for a day or two, it still sets the next "to do" for the proper time period from the last complete date.

This is a very basic requirement/feature that has been in the Palm world for years... it needs to be in Daylite.

Requests for support of repeating tasks is not new. I was a 1.x user of Daylite and asked repeatedly for repeating tasks. The response was usually its on our list of features it might be in the next release. But never was. It even reached the point where is was a high priority for version 2.x of Daylite (which got changed to version 3.x). When it didn't get added to version 3, I was told that the database model was incompatible with repeating tasks and that it would be a big engineering effort to add them. So don't get your hopes up. As far as I can tell, they made some unfortunate software architecture decisions early on that are incompatible with repeating tasks and they can't justify the expense of fixing those decisions. Repeating tasks are more difficult than appointments mainly because of the auto forward feature. Like what do you do when an uncompleted occurence of a repeating tasks autoforwards until it overlaps the next occurrence? Unless you design repetition into your tasks at the outset, you pretty much have to start from scratch to add repeating. So I have given up on Daylite. They don't consider it important enough and may never. Until it goes on an official feature list that they publicly advertise, I wouldn't be encouraged at all.
