Hi

I am experimenting with mass mailings, merging clients address details onto printed labels. My question is this:

How do I stop the labels printing out with line gaps between address details, for example:

Mr Bloggs
123 Any Street

Any Town
Anysville

AB1 234
United Kingdom

I have made sure that this is not due to incomplete address details in the contact database and is also not due to errors in my template design (on the label template all the lines are fine with no gaps between them).

Could anybody help me with this please.

Other than that I am really enjoying getting to grips with this superb program.

Hi Robbie,

This is not the answer to your question but this is how we do labels.

Basically we create a list of who we want to mail.
We get to the "spreadsheet view" with only the data showing that we want on the labels.
We select all
Then go file > Export > Export visible columns to file.
Export Comma delimited
Save file to desktop.
We then change the file extension from csv to xls.
Drag to Excel
Excel opens with wizard for importing.
Click through wizard
Now we have all addresses in a spreadsheet.
We save this as an excel workbook
Close
Open word
open new blank doc
Open data wizard
Select code of labels being used
Select excel spreadsheet a source of Data
Follow data wizard through.
Preview labels.
Print labels.

Long and boring but works.

You still get the "carriage returns" but we can control how they appear easier.

Having typed all that out I have realised how basic this is. Print labels. But how massively complicated it is to do.

Well thats prop not much help to you.

Sorry.

LOL

Well thanks for the reply Ben. That certainly seems a long way to do your labels. Either I have stumbled on a hitherto unheard of way of doing my labels quickly or it is easy peasy to do all this in DL. I treated myself to one of these label printers (Brother QL-500) and the labels print out wonderfully on a roll of pre-diecut labels with our company logo and all!

To choose who we want to mailshot today we sinply highlight all the contacts we want and click 'print' from the DL menu, select the label printer and bob's your uncle.

Just need to get rid, if possible, of those darn spaces......

Cheers for taking the time to reply though - I appreciate it.

Hi Robbie,

I might get one of those if it's that easy.

However I do send large mailouts of about 3000 at a time so sheets are easier.

Hi Ben

It's not the printer that makes this process easy. You can print your 3000 individually addressed labels in DL easily too using either the built in label templates or by creating your own label templates using:

Actions -> New print Layout -> Label Sheet

...and follow all the steps to creat your own custom label template(s).

it just so happened that I used this feature to create a template for the label printer but you could do this for any printer.

I just found this all out today - the rest of it is a blur at the moment - LOL.

By the way, greetings down there from a wet and cold North East (Bishop Auckland).

Cheers

Robbie

Hi,

I have recently tried using DL to print labels but got stuck on how to bring more data fields into the label.

Went back to using word. Which I hate!

In most cases I have found with clients, the extra data is stored in the original record. One way of checking is to look at a record that prints the extra line. Open it in edit mode and click on the very bottom of the address window. If the cursor goes to the end of the last line of text, the data is good. If the cursor goes to a blank line, you've inserted an extra carriage return when you created the record. Simply hit the delete key until your cursor rests at the end of the last line of text.

If you check this and you're still having problems. It might be that the layout is what is causing the issue. There are methods to insert blank lines after valid text. You may have chosen to add a blank line even if no text exists. You need to check the box beside 'If valid text, insert...' and then select Newline and After in the drop downs. Notice in the image that I've selected Street. But City State Postal Code, etc. are all on the same line. But because the Street has this option selected, Daylite will add a carriage return to the end of it.

Hi.
Labels are perhaps one of the best things about daylite!
It is possible to design a label sheet (Avery or whatever) and make a pretty foolproof way of making the labels all come come out as you would wnat.
We use this feature every single day to print out 8 to sheet lables or 14 to a sheet labels.
We even have out company logo and address on each label.
It is not that hard to do either.
The key is to use qualifiers and line breaks.
In the image sent by Steve above you can get an idea of how it works.
For example, in the UK we use the county sometimes. It is not used for addresses in London. So you can use the option that says.
If valid text (see ticked box above) then put in a new line after the current field being inserted. This then puts the county field on the next line. however if there is no County field then a new line will not be inserted.
Get it?
You can make a new line happen every time by putting the actual field on a new line otherwise use the options in the pulldown shown above.
Once you get the hang of it you can make some very robust "handle any situation" labels.
This is soo much faster than even thinking of going anywhere near Excel to do this simple job.
After all, this is what daylite is designed to do.

hope that helps,

Bill

I am nearly there. I have followed the advice here and managed to lose the empty line - great thanks.

Now I can't get the damn Company Name to print. I have the contact name and the address but not the company name.

Can somebody tell this idiot how to add the correct field to do this please. I must be just about there.......

thanks

Put this in the path:
parent.reportData.object.defaultRole.organization.name

Or go here...
Label Cell -> Contact -> Default Role -> Organisation -> Name

got that. I know it is not logical because it seems you can do the same things multiple times. But that should do it.

hope that helps
