Sorry if this is obvious or has been discussed, I searched with no such luck.
I'm confused by the role of Contacts linked to organizations and what gets synced to Address book. I have an Organization (Apple Computer). That Organization has the address, main phone number, etc. It gets synced to Address Book as I expect, I see that info. I have a contact linked to that Organization. That person syncs to Address book but there's no contact info linked, such as the address, phone number etc. Now this may be due to how the contact was originally created (imported from previous product, Now Up To date/contact). It seems that if I link Joe Blow to Apple, the linked data should appear when synced as I see it in the main List Detail Window. But in Address Book, I just see the persons name, the company (Apple Computer) but none of the other data. Is there a way around this? Maybe a screen capture will help.

Oh, and it would be incredibly useful if in the Detail pane of Daylite, in addition to the info seen above (name of organization and phone), I could see the address of the linked organization.
IOW, can I see all the linked data OF an Organization ON a Contact that's linked to it? Then sync that? TIA. |

Hi Andrew,
The Address Book issue is because AB is not a relational database so it can't display data from other AB records. If you need the Org's address to display in the Contact's record in AB, you'll need to make sure that the address is in the Contact's record in Daylite. OK, the question would be, why doesn't the contact info pick up the data from the Organization and place that data such that a sync would show that data in Address book?
I did see I can BULK EDIT multiple Contacts and ask that the Organization data be placed into those records. That's a start. But Bulk Edit is only available for more than one record (contact) at a time. What I think I (we) need is the same option but available when a user selects just one contact. Then you could ask for the same option as Bulk: Copy Default Address from Organization. IOW, I want some command that takes existing address data from an Organization that is linked to a contact (that has no such address data) and place that into that contact record. Then I suspect after a sync, when viewing that contact in Address Book, I'd see their address. |

OK, might be onto something. While not too intuitive, it appears if you select multiple contacts, even those that are not part of the same Organization and do this Bulk Edit (Copy Default Address from Organization), the selection does update from the differing organizations and applies that data into each Contact. That's a very good start. I'm hoping now that such data will appear in Address Book after a sync. Stay tuned.

The only thing the app isn't to smart about is if a contact has an existing Address from Contact and you use the command (Copy Default Address from Org), you get a duplicate. Messy but again, a start. Be nice if this command would not ever duplicate the same address...

The Apple Addressbook issues aside, your desire to see the address of the linked organization in Contact View is already accounted for by the 3 Pane option. In the middle pane is the name of the Organization and in the right-most pane is the address and phone number.

The three pane option in Daylite right? That's fine and good but I'm hoping to see this in Address Book (unless I'm misunderstanding you).
The bulk edit does seem to do the trick however. The original contacts had no address so this at least pulls the address from Org into Contact, after a Sync, I see them. |

I was just responding to your question (quoted above). Regards, Howard |

Thanks Howard. I do have that set now.
It would be really nice if that third view could be seen below the list view. At least on a nice 30" display, I like to have the list view take up all horizontal space so I can have many columns. The bottom (detail) section has a lot of unused space. It be really great if we could configure the (apparently) 5 differing sections as we desire. But yes, your suggestion helps in terms of seeing that previously hidden data. |

Howard, one other item. It appears that when you have the single list view, its possible to load up a number of different columns in that view but not when the two or three pane options are up. Is that correct or am I missing something.

You are correct, the 2 and 3 pane views are factory set and not configurable.

Andrew, Thank you for stumbling on this feature - I hope you found it early enough to be helpful. I spent an absurd amount of time cutting & pasting addresses & ph #'s between single contacts and organizations after my initial import this summer. I sure wish this aspect of the bulk edit feature had been more obvious or better documented. Thanks, Joel |

While I'm very happy the bulk edit is possible, it needs work (both in terms of UI, accessibility and functionality). I don't know why virtually any existing data field can't be bulk re-edited. I also wonder why I don't have the same functionally going the other way from Contact data to Organization.
For example, many of us use data detectors in Mail or elsewhere to add data to iCal and of course Address Book. Its possible to add a contact with address info that you may want to pass onto an existing Organization. Or you may, as I have, imported contacts from a legacy application and find I have a contact address that needs to propagate to an Organization I will produce. Daylite is a very powerful application and I find I have a love/hate relationship with it (more love of course). A great deal of existing and useful functionality found in competing products is absent and I wonder if there's a "not invented here" mindset. These functions are often found in multiple applications of this type. It makes migrating from such an app more difficult and one has to wonder why such simple functionally isn't found in such a powerful app. Simple example and I'll get off my soap box. Copy contact or Organization data from a record is quite weak. In Now Contact and at least two other competing applications, you can easily build as many copy templates as you wish, select a contact or origination and with a flyout menu, pick exactly what you want to copy to the clipboard. Name address, phone. Name address (more than one) and multiple phones. All that plus web page. You get the idea. You can cherry pick any data in a record for the clipboard. When I try this in Daylite, I get the basic info but not all I wish from a record of existing data. If such functionality is possible in Daylite, its not apparent. |
