I must say DMI is driving me crazy. Here are two very common things I want to do.

1. I get an email I want to create a task from it.
2. I use the sidbar select the contact (if the contact is in Daylite) and use the Create Task at bottom of the sidebar.
3. A task is created but none of the contacts are already linked. I have to re-look them up.

A different scenario:
1. Email has contacts not in Daylite and I do NOT want to create them, I just want to add the content of the mail as a task...
2. The sidebar has disabled the actions and I am unable to create a task.
3. I go to the Services menu and create the task.

Ugh. Why isn't this option always on? Why aren't there contextual menus for this thing.

I do this constantly and find DMI not much more useful than doing this manually.

Am I missing something?

Hi Andrew,

To create a linked task to a record in the DMI drawer, highlight the record first (as this tells DMI you are referring to this record) and then select 'new task' from the option menu.

In your second scenario, can you expand on why you would like to create a record not associated with a project, opportunity, contact or organization?

Okay thank you. I was assuming that if the name was check marked that when I created the task it would be automatically added. I see that there is another mode on top of it ... that being selection.

Personally I would like this to be the default behavior. I can always remove the contacts from the task's links if I wanted too. This would be similar to unchecking the contacts in DMI.

Regarding not wanting to create contacts from email but still wanting to create tasks...

I often get emails from organizations or generic emails for organizations that I want to create a task or appointment but do not want to clutter up my contacts in daylite by adding these transient emails.

Here is an example:

Chase.27959443.32643.143388996@notify.chase.com
do-not-reply@paypal.com
info-567904@hplfilmfestival.com
DoNotReply@cems.wamu.net

Of course some of these I may have organizations that I can lookup under other emails or names... but more often I just want to record a task for me to do. A task that I need to do but don't want to bother creating a full contact or organization since I may have no info to fill out a legitimate entry.

Another reason is an email that is forwarded to me through a third party.

My point is that if I want to create a task quickly, why am I forced to add the contact first or use a hidden services menu item to create the task or note.

Personally I would simply like a Contextual Menu while I am reading the email that I can right click and do: Quick Add As Note, Quick Add As Task ... etc.

If the contacts are know then the they are added as links otherwise not.

Less clicks. Quicker. More efficient.

Hey Andrew,

I will definitely log your requests for engineering.

Here are a couple points on why I feel you should create a contact record and link the task to that record, even when information for the contact is limited.

The first, to ensure relevant information is stored together for easy access. If I enter data, I want to be able to easily find it. Typically, with any object, there is a common denominator, a person. By having these objects linked to someone, instead of searching for the title of every object, you simply search for the person it involves, and with 2-3 clicks, you have the details you are looking for. Those emails came from somewhere, so it is important to keep that history.

The other reason is to build a rich database. Although today you may have limited information, as you continue to progress with business, more details may follow. The biggest benefit to Daylite is knowing all information is stored in one place, and keeping a rich history. Without creating these links, you can lose valuable information. Linking is the glue to Daylite. Any one can track their schedule, tasks, or contacts on a piece of paper but without glue, none of the paper will stick.

Thank you for your response.

I think changing the default behavior wrt to links and selection will make it much easier and efficient. IMHO

Regarding valuable information wrt links... I really think you need to let the user decide that. I am all for linking when it makes sense.

Daylite allows you to create tasks now without links, why force them through DMI? You can't anticipate everyone's workflow. Again if I get a cron job email to check my server I just want to create a task I don't need it to be linked to my company for example, it is really implied in this case.

But I would encourage your engineers to add a contextual menu option as I mention in addition to the sidebar... less moving the mouse, faster results, more happiness using Daylite.

Thank you again for the feedback.

Hey Andrew,

Of course, the decision does come down to the user but that is why I simply express my opinion.

I have logged your request for engineering. If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to contact feedback@marketcircle.com

Thanks for your input.

While on the subject of DMI...

There are often times I want to link the content of an email to the recipient(s). But DMI doesn't do this or provide the option, even "lookup the contact" using the dialog doesn't provide an option, it only allows you to add an email address to an existing contact.

DMI provides saves no time for me. I might as well just select all, copy, switch to daylite, do cmd-n, and create my task, then link manually.

Use Case I have over 4000 customers at our webstore and almost the same for other online marketplaces. We receive anonymous emails with content regarding exceptions, problems etc. The recipient is webstore@ourdomain.com or customersupport@ourdomain.com... what I want to do is create a task for one of these "departments" so they can be responded to. DMI insists I add the from contact first before creating a task which I want to link to the recipient.

cheers

Hey Andrew,

Thank you for spending the time to go into detail on your requests. This gives me all the information I need to log it for engineering.

Thanks again Andrew,
