I have two databases. One is my personal network of contacts. The other is my companies list of clients and contacts. In an ideal world, I would be able to "drag" a contact/organization/appointment object from one database viewer to the other and have the information transfer. I don't think it currently works this way. So…
What is the best way to get selected information from one DL database to another in an as need basis? *********************************** Macsimum News |

I would try using the column view, then Export Visible Columns and Selected Rows to File then drag it into an excel file, and visa versa for importing the data in the alternate database, via tab or comma delimited from Excel.

That would work. But since both databases are both DayLite dbs, I am hoping for something very simple. Again, the ideal solution would be to just drag, for example, a contact from one viewer to the other have have it drop in complete with all the contacts data and optionally some linked objects (like any organizations or appointment objects that are linked to it).
However, that is not how DayLite works today and indeed may never work. But if there is a simple solution to this issue, I would love to hear it. Else, your approach may be the only one. But it sure seems like there should be a simple way to move some objects from one DayLite db to another. *********************************** Macsimum News |

We've been promoting using one database instead of multiple because there are difficulties in moving data from one database to the other.
We recommend that you use categories and keywords to separate your work data from your personal data. In the case of multi-user environments, we recommend using the 'visibility' feature to block out your personal data from being viewable by others. In some ways, I regret adding the feature of allowing multiple databases open at the same time. It makes things way more difficult than they need to be (engineering wise). Over 90% of our users use a single database either locally or remotely. Having said that, *partial* data movement for one database to another is on the request list. I don't know when it would be done - the ROI does not seem to be that high with only a handful of people needing it. For the enterprising technical person - we have added some basic support for this kind of behavior. You can use some API from our Developer Kit to move Contacts, Organizations, Task, Appointments/Events and Notes from one database to another using an XML file as an intermidiary. If someone is willing to do that, I would be willing to tell you exactly what API to call and use. |
