Hopefully tomorrow if my local store has any in stock.

I've been reading the posts about DL Touch and it sounds perfect. But just a question about 'regular' syncing as it exists now. I'm a little confused (and have been for along time according to my wife) about what happens and how it happens.

When I used sync with my Palm 505, I was getting crazy results. Company names on their own with no data, duplicate contacts, all my phone number labels were screwed up royally and even ended up with multiple phone numbers for contacts with the same number. ie. 4 or 5 or more Work Fax phone numbers that were actually the work number? If I synced back with my desktop, all this would transfer back there and create a big mess. I just don't have the time to go back and fix everything. I've since stopped using my Palm and syncing anything.

Now that I'm interested in the iPhone. Does syncing actually work the way it's supposed to, and what's needed to make it work?

Excellent question!

I'll attempt, with my very limited knowledge, to address your question. May I ask you a question?

First, I’ve had similar problems syncing with a Palm Treo a year ago. I think that DL should offer clear guidance on syncing issues, especially with the new iPhone 2.0 OS. But I suspect that they are a small company and AJ, DL’s CEO, has said that half of their engineering team is devoted to developing DL Touch , the iPhone app.

Apple and DL aside, syncing is a complex and problematic issue. Large companies with huge budgets have significant and on-going problems with syncing their various databases.

Second, AJ said that they haven’t tested iPhone 2.0 syncing yet. You would think that Apple would give them advance copies, ahead of most other developers, of iPhone OS 2.0 and the even the new iPhone since DL is such a fundamental product for many users, and a strategic product for Apple – many companies must have DL in order to purchase Macs.

Third, DL to-iCal/Address-Book-to-MobileMe-to-multiple-devises should work. Think abut it: if you eliminated DL, Apple is telling us that the syncing would work to multiple devises just fine. AND DL simply syncs to iCal/Address Book. As I understand DL’s current syncing, it uses an Apple OS utility, Sync Services, to sync only between DL and iCal/Address Book. So it should work. I But beware.

Maybe DL QA people will test this thoroughly and post guidance soon. AJ said as much, “You can continue to use Sync Services, so you can will [sic] be able to get contacts/appointments to MobileMe that way. We have not tested this yet as MobileMe just came out, but it should work.”

If you try it let us know.

My question to you: Did you sync DL with the new iPhone OS 2.0 (that just can out Friday) to and from your one computer to your iPhone? If so, what was your experience?

BTW, the “Visits” to you posts may be greater. I’ve visited twice from 2 different machines and it says 0 visits.

Thanks for the info... and no, I didn't sync with the new iPhone OS. I'm still debating whether to get an iPhone or not. To get what I want, it'll bump up my cell plan about $65. Not sure I want to spend that much more each month just to have a few bells and whistles.

Understand. If you do get an iPhone, you'll love it. Plus you can show off your spectacular photos to prospective clients anywhere. :-)

I know I'd love it.. that's the problem. I've got a 30Gig iPod now to show the photos... but that larger screen sure is tempting.

The fundamental issue with synchronization to other apps (Address Book, iCal on the iPhone or their equivalents on the Palm) is that those apps are limited and/or have different data models.

We have to shoehorn a large multi-user system with much richer data into a single user system with very limited data richness. This is tremendously difficult to get right. We have to all kinds of translators when going out of Daylite and then when coming in.

With Daylite Touch, we control the system end to end - we control Daylite, we control the wireless sync platform and we control the app on the phone, so we aren't going to have this shoehorning madness (it literally is madness).

Don't get me wrong - we have many limitations - but they are of a more manageable nature now.

I'm pretty confident that when you see what Daylite Touch can do for you in terms of productive gains, you will not want to use the other apps or systems.

Thanks AJ. I may look at the iPhone closer once DL Touch is available.

Hi Mike
I use an iphne every day. The syncing works great. I am using 2.0 and have seen no issues to this point. AJ is correct though, the data set is not as complete as DL. My appointments are all there and my contacts as well, but the rest of the dataset is left in DL. The MobileME cloud works nice. Not to have to sync through iTune is great email and everything just happens. But, I can't wait for DL Touch to have most everything with me and editable. WOW. I use my iPhone to show clients photos as well. Choice is still yours. I made it and would do it again in a blink.

Thank you, Michael!

That's what I've been waiting for: a user who has sync'ed DL into iPhone 2.0. I'll try it myself today!

I have been experiencing some problems since transitioning to MobileMe. Previously my syncing was all working sweetly. Now I have all the MM side working fine - change a contact in Address Book or add an appointment in iCal and it magically appears on my iPhone (1st gen running 2.0). But when I try to sync DL with AB and iCal, the sync goes on for ever. I have to force quit after many hours. So I advise a little caution - DL tech support are working on this so I'll know soon if it's unique to me or if it's a general issue.

Ok... I GOT ONE! Last one they had today, a white 16Gig.

So... do I have to sync DL with Address Book and iCal to sync with the iPhone? I've read the Sync Services pdf but can't make heads or tails of it. I need someone to give me a step by step.... please?

I tried it and somehow synced twice and a lot of my appts are doubled up on the iPhone now. I'm scared to sync again, cause I don't want that to end up on DL.

Hi Mike
Turn on syncing in DL and make sure all the contacts and calendars are selected that you want. Let DL complete the sync. Then check ical and AB too see everything is there. Connect your iphone to itune and sync with it. Then if you have a .mac, now mobile me it will just do it. No more syncing calendars and contacts. If I have movies or photos, music then I have to connect to iTunes. Hope it helps

Thanks Michael.. that's what I needed to know. It worked - very well I might add. I'm a happy camper and will be even more so when DL Touch comes out!

Cheers,
