Here is a handy little plugin that generates year-based, sequential numbers for Project or Opportunities.

You must have Daylite 3.5 installed and you must run Mac OS X 10.4.9 at an absolute minimum.

You will find a new menu item in the 'Actions' main menu. The format of the number is [2 digit year - number], so [07-1], [07-34] etc... Projects and opportunities have their own counters and each counter is reset at the beginning of the year (so the first one in 2008 would be [08-1]). These serial numbers are prefixed to the front of the name of the project or the opportunity. These numbers cannot be generated while using an offline database - it must be done on a regular database.

Download it here.

Enjoy...

This is a very handy feature and would like to relaunch it ... would really be nice if it could be changed like in Billings in a scheme like nect number is %year%%month%%next new number%

I would really like to add this feature to the forms. Is it possible to tweak it so that it can apply to forms as well. I would really like to see that as a standard feature in the custom forms section, where you can add a custom field that actually has a serial number using any format you wish.

AJ -
I have been looking more closely at Salesforce.com and would really like to see DayLite keep my business by adding some additional features that include creating new objects. One thing that is great about SF is that when you create a new object it has all the possible field options for you including serial numbers. I would really like to be able to automatically create serial numbers for forms and have those forms merged into an email or document for delivery. In my business we track everything by numbers and to be able to associate those numbers would work great. This would be a simple field type addition in the forms section. Is this something you guys can implement quickly?

AJ, I have tried this plug in and it would be better if...the number was placed in an extra feild and it could be exicuted automatically upon creation of a new opportunity.

AJ, thank you for your plugin!

As it was wished in various topics ans posts,
I am happy that there is a solution for that.

But I agree with Jeff that the number should be placed into the extra fields.

Suggestion:
A checkbox next to the code/number fields (for Contact, Organization, Opportunities, Objects and Products) at Forms & Fields Preferences to Apply your plugin to it. Then the number should be populated automaticaly upon creation of the new record (contacts and so forth)

Thanks for considering that.
best regards

each opportunity, estimate, etc. already has a unique number assigned to it by DayLite. I actually have it displayed on a report template.

I don't understand why we can't search something by this number...

My Opps all have the Opportunity ID displayed in the list view. But, when some one calls me about something six months later, and I am trying to figure out what they are talking about... it would be helpful if I could ask what the ID number on the estimate they received was... but no, you can't search for that data... as unique as it is.....

Actually, you can in column view add the Task Id, Project Id, or Opportunity Id to display the internal ID of the object.

This is available to reports.

As for searching, yes I don't think that is a field you can search on. It is not part of the smart list criteria. The best you can do I suppose is to add the ID to the column view, sort by ID and then scroll to you find it.

p.s. AJ it has been almost a year and you never answered the question... can you make the source code to Unique Number Plugin available so that we can customize it?
