Hi Andy,

The working of your much appreciated widget is very iffy for me. I have not been able to get it to work in projects and it seems to work in some contacts but not others. Where is does not work it displays the title "notes" but is blank below. This is just a guess but it may have something to do with how deep the window is. On my own name where I have lots of roles I am unable to get it to display correctly.
Thanks-Steve

Hi Stephen

I'm betting this is the known issue with one or more quotes being used within the note you are trying to attach via the widget; there is some parsing going on within the widget code, and the presence of quotes within any of the text of the note causes the code to think the note text has finished prematurely, causing the widget to go blank.

I have been looking for a solution to this with little effect to date; it might be that I need another function in the Daylite code to make the text ‘quote-safe’ that simply isn’t available yet…

In general, if the note widget is coming back as blank, it is indicative of a problem parsing the note text, and you should suspect some non-ascii character or quote is causing it to choke. You can change the quotes to ‘smart-quotes’ as a workaround, or simply remove them completely.

Andy,
I don't think this is the issue, at least in my case. I have created a simple note with only a few words to test. I also linked a note that I know worked in another contact and it did not show up. Also I noticed that if there is no HUD the widget returns "HUD note found." In the contacts that it does not work the field is blank even without a HUD note attached. As one last test I linked a note that would not work in a contact to a working contact and it did work.

Stephen,

Can you be so good as to send me some screenshots of the various notes and the Contacts they are linked to, as I’m not 100% sure what you’re describing.

It sounds like something very screwy is going on, but without more details I am at a loss as to suggest what’s happening.

Thanks

For any others who come across the same issue, after corresponding off-forum, it looks like this is another instance of another Note attached to the Contact containing a ‘problem’ character, like a quote.

When using the HUD Widget in it's current version, if any of the Notes attached to an object contain a quote character, the Widget will choke.

If the Widget is blank, please check all of the Notes attached to that object—even if they don’t have {HUD} in the title—to check if they contain any quotes; if so, you’ll need to edit that Note and remove them.

I’ll try and see if I can work around this in a future version of the Widget.

HI! Andy, it's Rodrigo again. I find your Notes Widget a must for me, however, I've tried everything but can't get it to work. I'm always on Daylite's latest version and also have Mac's latest whatever (MacBook Pro Dual Intel Core Duo - MO X 10.4.8 - ).
All the best

Hi Rodrigo

Can you be a little more specific?

The few people that have posted on here that have had difficulty before have generally got it working eventually, so I’m fairly confident that aren’t any major issues with the Widget (other than the quotes thing…).

How, exactly, is it not working?

Can you confirm what you have done to install it and get it to work, in as much detail as possible.

(Feel free to send screen-shots off-forum—or on-forum if you are okay with making their details public—if you think that would help.)

Cheers

Hi Andy,
This is your party but if you don't mind I would like to remind everyone to "turn on" the note hud.

Thanks again for your time and effort.

HI! Andy, yes, I have put in the Notes title: {HUD} - 'HUD' - "HUD" - .HUD. However, unsucessfully, and yes I have activated the the Note HUD.
Many thanks for your patience.
All the best

If the Widget is coming up as blank, it indicates that one of the Notes attached to that Contact is being parsed incorrectly. Note that it doesn’t have to be the Note you are trying to display in the Widget; it could be any note attached to the Contact.

How the Widget currently works is that it parses all of the Notes that are attached to the Contact/Org and then displays the ones that are marked with the ‘HUD’ string.

So you will need to go through all of the Notes attached to the Contact/Org checking for odd characters, embedded graphics, etc.

Best thing is to start with a new Contact, with no Notes attached, then attach a single HUD Note and check that works, then add in all your other Notes one at a time until you track down which one breaks the Widget, then track down which character is causing the parser to choke.

If any of your notes have your signature in, including your logo graphic, I’d suspect that first.

Hello,

This widget is great. Strange that marketcircle did not include it as a basic functionality of their software.

Are scroll bar supported in HUD (for long text)?
